poem[The Canary

  • Who had a little bird? Mary
  • How were its feathers? bright and yellow
  • Why was he a pretty fellow? for he had slender legs.
  • What did he sing always? the sweetest notes.
  • What delighted Mary? His sweetest notes.
  • Where did she sit? near his cage.
  • Why? to hear his sweetest notes.
  • What did she carry to him daily? Crumbs of bread and dainty seeds.
  • What did she also do? She kept his cage clean.
  •  What do you get from friends who love you truly?
  • Songs and smiles.

The Canary
~Elizabeth Turner

Mary had a little bird,
With feathers bright and yellow,
Slender legs-upon my word,
He was a pretty fellow!

Sweetest notes he always sung,
Which much delighted Mary;
Often where his cage was hung,
She sat to hear Canary.

Crumbs of bread and dainty seeds
She carried to him daily,
Seeking for the early weeds,
She decked his palace gaily.

This, my little readers, learn,
And ever practice duly;
Songs and smiles of love return
To friends who love you truly.

sung-hung, Mary-canary, seeds-weeds,
 daily-gaily,
 learn-return, duly-truly.
